artists highlight....

bucks open studios... commercial square studios

Every year, thousands of artists nationwide open up their studios to the public during 'Open Studios' season. My local event is Bucks Open Studios in High Wycombe, once infamous in the furniture making industry, home to Robin Day's early years at art college (now the Buckinghamshire New University and still renowned in the world of furniture and design) and still home to an incredible variety of artists, from disciplines as wide and varied as ceramics, jewellery, embroidery, painting, glass-blowing and of course furniture making, to name just a few.

Bucks Open Studios will run until the 22nd June and covers villages and towns throughout the county. I'm thrilled to have finally tracked down a few of my shots from last year's visit. Some pictures,as yet, not credited until I visit the studios this weekend, when I can hopefully fill in the missing gaps.

The first 7 shots are of Elizabeth Callinicos' studio space, which I instantly fell in love with and spent a lot of time in. With an MA from The Royal College of Art, Elizabeth took part in an exhibition, 3Up, a season of 3 person shows in 3 parts for The Crafts Council in 2000.

Elizabeth's work was showcased in the second part of the series entitled Tectonic and billed as 'three relationships between craft and architecture.' Exhibiting alongside Elizabeth were Shin and Tomoko Azumi and Thomas Heatherwick Studio (whose current and arguably most notable work comes in the form of the 2012 Olympic flame and the proposed London Garden Bridge).

I will post further shots of other exhibitors I visited last year, as well as this year's event which I will attend over the next few days. Meanwhile, take a look at the links below for further information and events in your local area. Most of all, if you have even the slightest interest in design, then take time out to visit just a few artists and designers-many of whom open up their homes to proudly display their crafts. We need to support and champion British design and aspiring talent...enjoy!

I also love open studios but as always there's so much choice in London that it can get quiet overwhelming..
